Men’s Group

Men's Group 8:00 AM

The Men's Group at Chestnut Street Baptist Church meets every Saturday morning from 8:00 to 10:00 AM. We meet to share our lives together as Christian brothers and be "mutually encouraged by each other's faith" (Romans 1:12). As we listen to each other and share our struggles and joys, we aim for honesty, humility, accountability and a focus on how Christ is working in our lives. While not specifically a Bible study, the scriptures are central to our perspective and conversation. It is our hope that being a part of this group will help us grow closer to Christ and to mature as his disciples while bearing witness to him in our marriages, families, church and community.

We welcome all men, regardless where you are on your spiritual journey, particularly those struggling with issues of life, church, faith or belief.

MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE

What Does Maundy Thursday Mean?

Christ's "mandate" is commemorated on Maundy Thursday---"maundy" being a shortened form of mandatum (Latin), which means "command." It was on the Thursday of Christ's final week before being crucified and resurrected that He said this commandment to His disciples. Jesus and his disciples had just shared what was known as the Last Supper and he was washing their feet when he stated:

"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another" (John 13:34).

What Does Communion Have to Do with Maundy Thursday?

Often, during communion, a pastor will read the following passage about what happened on the events of Maundy Thursday:

1 Corinthians 11:23-26: "For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way, after supper he took the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes."

COMMUNITY GOOD FRIDAY SERVICE | CHESTNUT STREET BAPTIST Church

Good Friday Community Service

St. Thomas Episcopal Church | 33 Chestnut Street, Camden

Why Is it Called Good Friday?

For Christians, Good Friday is a crucial day of the year because it celebrates what we believe to be the most pivotal day in the history of the world. On Good Friday, Jesus willingly suffered and died by crucifixion as the ultimate sacrifice for our sins (1 John 1:10).

D.A. Carson wrote, "It was not nails that held Jesus to that wretched cross; it was his unqualified resolution, out of love for his Father, to do his Father’s will—and it was his love for sinners like me." It is a good day because he traded places for you and for me. It is a good day because it was the day he conquered sin and death so that we will never be apart from God on this side of heaven or the other.

If you had asked his friends, family, and disciples on the day he died, they wouldn’t have said it was a good day when all hope seemed lost; evil and death seemed to have triumphed, but their responses would’ve been very different three days later because the forces of evil had been defeated, death had been destroyed, and from that point on, we all have a way to be free of sin and death.
